Speaking to the Financial Times at a conference in Canada, the opposition leader said the current Brexit deal, negotiated largely by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, was "too thin".

The Trade and Co-Operation Agreement, which is due for review in 2025, is currently expected to undergo minor tweaks at its next reading.

But these latest comments from Sir Keir Starmer indicate Labour’s strongest position yet, and foreshadow the type of Brexit his party would seek.

He said: "Almost everyone recognises the deal Johnson struck is not a good deal — it's far too thin.

"As we go into 2025 we will attempt to get a much better deal for the UK…We have to make it work. That's not a question of going back in, but I refuse to accept that we can't make it work."

It is unclear whether Brussels would be open to making major changes to the hard-fought deal.

Reacting to Sir Keir’s comments, a Conservative spokesman said: "Three years ago he promised he wouldn't seek major changes to the UK's new relationship with the EU, but now his latest short term position is that he will.

"What price would Keir Starmer be prepared to pay to the EU for renegotiating our relationship?"

So what do you think? Does the Brexit deal need renegotiating? Vote in the poll above and join the debate in the comments below.
