A British tourist has died after falling 300 feet from a ladder bridge in Austria's Dachstein Mountains.

This area is popular among tourists seeking picturesque Instagram photos.

The 42-year-old, who is yet to be named, was alone on a 130-foot ladder when he encountered difficulties and tragically fell into the valley below.

This ladder connects the lower section of Donnerkogel Mountain to the "Greater" part of the mountain, which includes a peak standing at 6,740 feet.

Authorities have determined that the man's fall was an accident and have ruled out any third-party negligence.

This climb is categorised as a via ferrata, or an "iron path," which involves the use of steel cables, rungs, pegs, and ladders. Climbers are securely attached via harnesses for safety.

The man's body was recovered from the gorge with the assistance of two helicopters and officers from nearby police departments.

On Instagram, thousands of thrillseekers have shared their experiences climbing this exhilarating tourist attraction, often referred to as "the stairway to heaven".

The climb is rated as moderate/difficult and is not recommended for beginners.

In several Austrian towns, local residents have expressed frustration with tourists invading their communities in search of social media content.

One example is the town of Hallstatt which closed its famous lakefront view in May due to an influx of tourists drawn by its resemblance to Arendelle - the setting of Disney movie frozen.

Mayor Alexander Scheutz noted that the town, with only 750 permanent residents, received over 7,000 daily visitors seeking the movie-inspired views.

In a separate incident earlier this month, a 55-year-old Virginia man lost his life while attempting the challenging 24-mile Rim-to-Rim hike of the Grand Canyon.
