The late Queen Elizabeth was known for her respect of tradition and protocol, and it seems this attitude extended towards her food preferences first thing in the morning.

While staying at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle Her Late Majesty was treated to several courses at breakfast, waking up to tea and biscuits before being served a hearty meal consisting of cereal, toast and crumpets, among other things.

She also enjoyed kippers, which she used to eat with her younger sister Princess Margaret when they were children, according to the book Dinner at Buckingham Palace by royal servant Charles Oliver.

He said: "Every day begins with an egg, and they're eaten for tea, too – with crumpets, if you're Prince Charles. The Queen favours brown eggs, believing that they taste better.

"Her great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria, ate her boiled egg, served in a golden egg cup, with a golden spoon.

"Kippers, in a number of uncomplicated variations, have remained a favourite with the Queen ever since [her childhood] – for breakfast, as a savoury or a late-night supper. The queen is also fond of smoked haddock as a breakfast dish."

Although the Queen may have believed brown eggs to be healthier, Healthline.com has dismissed this claim, saying: "Often, people who prefer brown eggs do so because they believe brown eggs are healthier and more natural than white eggs. However, the truth is that all eggs are nutritionally very similar, regardless of their size, grade, or colour.

"Both brown and white eggs are healthy foods. A typical egg contains lots of vitamins, minerals, and high-quality protein, all wrapped up into less than 80 calories."

The late Queen managed to live to the ripe old age of 96, and her healthy diet likely helped her to reach such a milestone as she liked to stick to similar meals each week.

Former royal chef Darren McGrady gave an insight to food preparation at the Palace, telling Hello! magazine: "For a main course she loved game, things like Gaelic steak, fillet steak with a mushroom whisky sauce, especially if we did it with venison.

"For a first course she loved the Gleneagles paté, which is smoked salmon, trout and mackerel", often made with ingredients from the Balmoral estate.
