A mother has said her life was changed forever after she posted a single selfie online.

Georgia Croud, 26, has described how she was body-shamed after she posted a photo online five years ago.

Ms Croud was preparing for a night out with friends when she posted the photo of herself getting ready.

She said: "The sun was shining through the window and at that moment I felt great about myself and my life."

In a spur-of-the-moment act, Ms Croud took a photo of herself with her dressing gown slightly off the shoulder.

The photo revealed no more than an off-the-shoulder dress, she said.

Within minutes of posting the photograph, Ms Croud’s life was changed forever when she began receiving a torrent of abuse.

Her image was reposted by a man who publicly shamed her for posting the image, citing her being a mother for his distaste at the photo.

Speaking to Cheshire Live, Ms Croud said: “The abuse started within a minute.

“‘You’re a mum - you should have more respect for yourself' was the kindest comment.”

Ms Croud added: “It was relentless, cruel, and merciless. Anything I tried to say was manipulated and turned against me and I had no way of doing anything about it.”

She said she felt “hopeless and helpless” as the barrage of hate continued day after day.

She added: “I just never expected this: how could people be so gratuitously cruel?

“It was so intense and sustained that I started to believe it all myself. Why would so many people say these bad things about me if it wasn't true?”

Ms Croud said her mental health began to take a severe hit and that it was “just a blur of despair”.

In response to the hate, Ms Croud and student Angharad Davies, 27, have launched an initiative aimed at empowering women.

Their organisation, known as Goodgirl, organises events which invite women to share their experiences, regain their confidence, and boost their self-image.

Speaking about her recovery, Ms Croud said credits her close friends for their unwavering support.

She said: “It took a long time but I gradually came to realise that I had done nothing wrong and it wasn't just me this was happening to.”
