The Marine Corps Marathon will take place Sunday, the latest installment of an event that has become a fixture in the nation’s capital, but one that also makes travel difficult on both sides of the Potomac River.

The 48th annual race will begin at 7:55 a.m. at the Runners’ Village in the Pentagon’s North parking lot. After virtual marathons during the pandemic, the standard 26.2-mile race resumed last year.
Organizers say more than 23,000 runners from each state and 63 countries are registered to participate.
Metro will open two hours early, at 5 a.m., with organizers paying the additional expenses to operate the transit system.

Drivers were being advised to seek travel alternatives between Virginia and District on Sunday. D.C. police said the following streets will be closed to traffic from about 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.:
7th Street from Constitution Avenue NW to Independence Avenue SW. 14th Street from Constitution Avenue NW to Independence Avenue SW. M Street from Canal Road to Wisconsin Avenue NW. Canal Road from Arizona Avenue to Foxhall Road NW. Wisconsin Avenue from Wisconsin Avenue to K Street NW. K Street from 27th Street to Wisconsin Avenue NW. Madison Drive from 3rd Street to 15th Street NW. Jefferson Drive from 3rd Street to 15th Street SW. Independence Avenue from 23rd Street to 12th Street SW. Rock Creek Parkway from Calvert Street to Ohio Drive NW. 14th Street from Independence Avenue to the 14th Street Bridge SW. HOV lanes of the 14th Street Bridge. Key Bridge. Memorial Bridge.

Spout Run Parkway (eastbound only) from Langston Boulevard to George Washington Parkway. N. Lorcom Lane from N. Edgewood Street to Spout Run Parkway. N. Lynn Street from 19th Street N. to Key Bridge. N. Rhodes Street from Key Boulevard to eastbound Langston Boulevard. N. Veitch Street from 19th Street N. to eastbound Langston Boulevard.

Bell Street to Crystal Drive. 18th Street S. from S. Bell Street to Crystal Drive. 20th Street S. from S. Bell Street to Crystal Drive. I-395 North Exit 10A to Boundary Channel Drive. Southbound Route 110 will be closed from Washington Boulevard to Route 1 beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday and will reopen at 5 p.m. Sunday.
