Jeremy Hunt hails UK growth as he unveils autumn statement

       Jeremy Hunt hailed the UK for growing faster than the eurozone as he unveiled his autumn statement.

       The Chancellor took a swipe at Labour saying "they don't like to hear this" as he reeled off a list of countries Britain has outperformed in terms of economic growth since 2010.

       The nations included EU members Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands and Austria.

       Mr Hunt pointed to Rishi Sunak's pledge to grow the economy as he delivered his autumn statement in the Commons this afternoon.

       He told MPs: "Since 2010, despite inheriting what was then the worst recession since the Second World War, Conservative administrations have presided over faster growth than many of our major competitors including Spain, Italy, France..."

       Gesturing to the Labour benches opposite, Mr Hunt went on: "Well they don't like to hear this but let me tell them the list.

       "Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Japan, we've grown faster than all of them since 2010."

       The Chancellor's comments prompted loud cheers from the Tory benches.

       He continued: "But all those countries have faced a pandemic and an energy shock and as a result last autumn the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) forecast a recession in which the economy was forecast to shrink by 1.4 percent this year, instead it grew. In fact it's grown faster than the euro area.

       "Revised numbers from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) now say the economy is 1.8 percent larger than pre-pandemic.

       "And looking ahead the OBR expects the economy to grow by 0.6 percent this year and 0.7 percent next year.

       "After that, growth rises to 1.4 percent in 2025, then 1.9 percent in 2026, 2 percent in 2027 and 1.7 percent in 2028."
