A man was found fatally shot Friday morning in Northeast Washington, pushing the District’s homicide count to 260 — the most people killed in a single year since 2002.

The latest fatal shooting occurred in the 600 block of Hamlin Street NE, D.C. police said. A department spokesperson said that just before 8:15 a.m., officers found a man who had been shot and was unconscious and not breathing. He died at the scene, according to police.

Police identified the victim Sunday as Marcus Vines, 37, of Northeast Washington. Efforts to reach his family were unsuccessful.

Authorities had not made an arrest in his killing as of Monday.

The shooting comes as authorities in the District are under intense pressure to curb crime, with the pace of deadly violence surging over the past 12 months in D.C. as it dropped in other cities across the country.
