The confrontation was apparently initiated when officers on patrol in the area of F Street NW about 8:30 p.m. saw a man they suspected of having a gun, said Executive Assistant Police Chief Jeffery Carroll. Reasons for that suspicion were not given.
As officers approached, the man “took off running,” Carroll said. When officers continued their efforts to stop him, he displayed a firearm, according to Carroll.

Many details could not be learned immediately after the incident.
It was not clear Monday night exactly what prompted the officer to shoot. Carroll, noting that investigation was in its preliminary stages, said that was one of the matters to be looked into.
It was also not clear how far the pursuit extended and whether the man was spotted initially in the same block where he was shot. Some preliminary police accounts indicated that part of the incident may have occurred in the 700 block of F Street.
The section of F Street involved is in the heart of downtown, two or three blocks north of Pennsylvania Avenue NW and about three blocks southeast of the Metro Center train station.
The location is just west of Capital One Arena. Questions of crime and safety around the venue became prominent last week in connection with a proposal to build a new sports arena in Alexandria.
Discussion of the proposal to move the Washington Wizards basketball team and Washington Capitals hockey team have provoked public discussion of conditions in the vicinity.
