SIBU: Sarawakians especially the Dayak community mourned the loss of a prominent poetess Nyong Aji who breathed her last in Kapit on Jan 5.

Nyong's eldest daughter, Sim Ah Hua, said in her Facebook post that her mother was 64 years old.

The wake will be held at the family's residence in Sungai Pelajau, Bukit Goram.

“The cause of my mother's death will be known after the issuance of the death certificate,” said Sim on Monday (Jan 8) when contacted.

Nyong left behind a legacy that spanned over 30 years, contributing significantly to the Dayak community through her mastery of traditional poetry.

Hailing from Teluk Buing in Kapit, she not only produced several acclaimed 'Pantun Iban' albums but also showcased her skills on various prestigious platforms.

Learning the art solely through observation and practice, she absorbed the essence of 'pantun' by studying her elders performing during special ceremonies at the longhouse in her younger days.

Her talent and dedication earned her invitations to perform for dignitaries, including a presentation for the then-yang di-pertuan agong Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in 2001 and former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Sarawak Head of State Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, and former chief minister the late Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

Nyong's fame transcended regional boundaries as she was featured in national-level events and participated in by-invitation only tours in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru.
