SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) targets to collect RM1.35 billion in zakat (tithe) contributions this year, said its chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.

       He said that the target was set based on the impressive performance of the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) in 2023.

       Abdul Aziz said that zakat collection in the state surpassed RM791mil as of November 2023, an increase of three per cent compared to the same period in 2022.

       In 2022, LZS achieved a historic milestone by collecting a record-high zakat of RM1.07bil and distributing RM1.05bil to the asnaf group.

       "I hope LZS can further expand its zakat distribution to Universiti Islam Selangor (UIS) through amil (tithe collector) for educational development,” he said at the launch of MAIS’ Anti-Corruption Plan here on Wednesday (Jan 17).

       Abdul Aziz added that the Selangor Wakaf Corporation collected RM75.498 million in wakaf (endownment) funds last year, achieving 98% of its target.

       Meanwhile, he said Mais has outlined five key areas and 39 initiatives to ensure the success of its anti-corruption plan.
