‘Just what the world needs’: Boris Johnson backs Donald Trump's return to the White House

Boris Johnson and Donald Trump discuss a trade deal in 2019

Boris Johnson has said the world needs a second Donald Trump presidency, backing his fellow blonde-haired right winger for a return to the White House.

In his weekly column, the former Prime Minister says the “global wokerati” has already started “having hysterics” over the prospect of a Donald Trump return, however argues it “could be just what the world needs”.

The former Foreign Secretary sticks by his diplomatic training, however, saying his early endorsement of Mr Trump “is in no way to diminish the excellent qualities of Joe Biden, who has done many good things”.

Nor does he downplay Donald Trump’s alleged role in the January 6 riots in 2021, which Mr Johnson calls an “egregious error”.

He recommends that liberal elites opposed to a Mr Trump return should stop “hyperventilating and clutching our pearls”.

“We need to look dispassionately at what happened in his last -presidency as a guide to the future.”

The endorsement may come as a surprise to some, given Mr Trump’s refusal to commit to military assistance for Ukraine compared with Mr Johnson’s own energetic support for the embattled country.

However he asked readers to “ask yourself first: which American president was the first to stand up for Ukraine, after Putin’s invasion of 2014?”

“Was it the great liberal -internationalist Barack Obama? No sir-ree.”

“It was Donald Trump who gave the Ukrainians those Javelin anti-tank weapons which — together with the UK NLAW missiles and other weapons — were so valuable to the Ukrainians in the battle for Kyiv.”

Mr Johnson says he “simply cannot believe that Trump with ditch the Ukrainians”, and argues the former president is merely playing to his sceptical supporters within the Republican Party.

His weekly Daily Mail column concludes that as long as Mr Trump backs Ukraine, a second term for him “can be a big win for the world”.

He also suggests a second-term Trump presidency in 2020 would have prevented the current actions of Iran and Hamas.

“I ask you, in all seriousness — do you think any of this would now be happening if Donald Trump had been president for the past four years?

“It was Trump who suddenly -staggered the world, at the beginning of 2020, by violently liquidating Qasem Soleimanyi, the head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The diplomatic world had conniptions. But we didn’t hear much from Iran, for the rest of the Trump presidency, did we?

Mr Johnson also claims Donald Trump will be best placed and most-willing to deliver the much sought-after UK-US free trade deal now Britain has left the EU.

In addition to foreign policy, the former PM argues the world needs a US president who is an enthusiastic exponent of free market capitalism after the “nightmare of Covid”, and again says Mr Trump is that candidate.

Mr Johnson also reveals something about the private Donald Trump he got to know and like during his time as Prime Minister.

“I have always found him, personally, a model of old-fashioned courtesy and good -manners. I must confess the truth: I like his style.
