KOTA KINABALU: The Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark would bring an economic boost to thousands of villagers and at the same time multiply tourist arrivals and social activities in the area.

       Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the Geopark, sprawling over 4,750 sq km and covering the districts of Ranau, Kota Marudu and Kota Belud, is home to some 423 villages.

       “The existence of this Geopark will provide economic and social benefits to villagers, especially in tourism, homestay programmes and cultural activities,” he said.

       He said this after officiating at the Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark announcement ceremony and the Sabah Park Diamond Jubilee in Kota Belud, Saturday (Jan 20).

       Hajiji said activities of trade, work opportunities, tourism and cultural preservation among many other things can be pushed further with this geopark.

       “The chance to market our local uniqueness globally is now available and we should make full use of this advantage for the betterment of our standard of living, social development and economic well-being,” he said.

       He said educational and awareness programmes on sustainable development and practises within the Geopark would add value to agricultural activities there as well.

       Hajiji said infrastructural development is set to be seen, while more job opportunities will be opened up for locals too.

       He said the Geopark recognition is part of the Sabah Maju Jaya development plan and vision, whereby one of the three main trusts in this initiative is to focus on sustainable development.

       “Therefore conservation of the environment, development of basic infrastructure and social-economic growth for this area must be given priority,” he said.

       Hajiji urged locals and visitors alike to work hand in hand with the government in the protection and conservation of the geopark from irresponsible quarters.

       This is Sabah’s treasure and a gem that has to be taken good care of for a long period of time, he said.

       The Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark declared in May last year is a unique geological formation, dating back millions of years with a diverse range of flora and fauna where indigenous communities, cultures and traditions coexist harmoniously within the area.
