EDUCATORS and activists are calling for urgent action to save SJK(T) Ladang Sungai Biong which has started this year with just seven pupils and seven teachers, Malaysia Nanban reported.

The school in Sauk, Perak, was founded more than 60 years ago and is one of the 12 schools in the Kuala Kangsar district.

Dr Jeyabalan Valliappan, a speaker at the school’s international Thiruvalluvar Festival, stressed the need for immediate intervention.

With Tamil school enrolments on the decline, several face the threat of closure, which highlights the importance of a collective consciousness within the community to enrol their children in Tamil schools.

“Organising cultural shows and events alone cannot preserve their heritage,” he added.

The Thiruvalluvar Festival, which is the first of its kind in the state, featured activities and competitions related to Thiruvalluvar and his celebrated work Thirukkural with participation from all Tamil schools in the district.
