AMPANG: A 34-year-old man was detained for posing as a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer and attempting to steal RM30,000 from a mosque committee here.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Azam Ismail said the mosque treasurer was approached by the suspect who introduced himself as a MACC officer at about 2pm on Jan 19.

"The suspect informed the treasurer that there were some discrepancies in the mosque's finances and asked him to produce the mosque committee's chequebook for inspection before leaving the mosque," he said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 25).

At about 3pm on the same day, the treasurer received a call from a bank that a man had attempted to cash in a cheque for RM30,000 but was rejected, he said.

"The treasurer checked the chequebook and realised a piece of cheque was missing," he added.

ACP Mohd Azam said the investigation led police to arrest the suspect at about 1.35pm on Jan 23.

"The suspect had two prior criminal records and he tested positive for methamphetamine.
