KUALA LUMPUR: Plans are being drawn up to nominate Chinese new villages in Selangor as a Unesco World Heritage Site to recognise their cultural and historical significance.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the Selangor government and the government would soon discuss the details.

"It has been 76 years since the new villages in Selangor were founded in 1948.

"I will engage with the state government to begin a study on (the nomination process)," he said on Thursday (Feb 1) when launching the Balik Kampung CNY Fest at a mall here.

The minister also congratulated Kuala Lumpur on its 50th anniversary as a Federal Territory.

In June last year, Nga said seven villages were selected as national representatives for submission to Unesco for World Heritage Site status.
