Politicians play a sort of by-election bingo during the days immediately following the poll. From Jacob Rees Mogg stating that he first started telling people at the age of 12, that by-elections are never a reflection of true public feeling, and that he would still be doing so well into his next century, the losing side ring out the same old lines. As soon as I heard the Conservatives had lost because of mid-term blues, because of low turnout and that we should never forget there is only one poll that really counts; I was tempted to shout ‘House’.
Whist these platitudes are as much a part of the political furniture as the green benches of the House of Commons itself, I’m not sure that on this occasion even the tired politicians trotting them out in the early hours of the morning believe them. Friday was as grim as it gets for governments and for all the spin and bluster, the hard facts are that if the Wellingborough swing were to be replicated at a general election the Conservative Party would be reduced to a rump of 4 MPs.
To be clear, what Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives are facing is a potential extinction event rather than a defeat. What makes this political implosion all the more remarkable, is that no one I speak to in my Red Wall constituency of Rossendale and Darwen in Lancashire seems to even like Keir Stammer or be clamouring for a Labour Government.

In fact, in Wales, where the Labour Party is in power, on virtually every measure public services are worse than in England. The NHS is failing, schools floundering and farmers are literally taking to the streets in a ‘go slow’ protest at Labour rule. As they trundle down the road at 21mph in their tractors, which is actually classed as speeding in most parts of Wales, they are sending a clear message that Labour is not the answer.
The question they should be asking themselves in Number 10 Downing Street is not how have we got it so wrong but how can we start to get it right to save Britain from the grip of socialism?
Unfortunately for the Government a narrative has taken hold that the Conservative party is no longer worthy of your vote because it is no longer Conservative. This is driving many of our voters to the protest party Reform. People only stop protesting, as the Welsh Labour Government is about to find out, when their protest has been heard and acted upon. Already I have heard my colleagues calling for tax cuts, as welcome as that would be, we need to do much more to rediscover the Conservative mojo what drove Boris’ stunning election victory.

When people voted for Boris’ Conservatives they weren’t just voting for lower taxes but for a type of Conservatism that puts the individual and freedom above the state. In fact the absolute anthesis of David Cameron’s vison of nanny state Conservatism. That sort of Government knows best, globalist agenda is not what Britain wants. It was rejected in the 2016 Brexit Referendum and rejected again in 2019.
It’s time for Rishi Sunak to take a step back and think again. Telling the British people you have a plan, only works at the ballot box if it’s the same plan as your voters want. As Conservatives we need to take a good hard look at what we are offering. If it’s a war on woke, investing in our armed forces, reducing both legal and illegal migration from a flood to a trickle and making people better off we stand a chance of persuading the electorate that delivering our shared plan will improve their lives.
That’s what people voted for in 2019, and Rishi, they will vote for it again. By-elections be dammed, this is a battle for Britain, come on Rishi stand with us and Britain will win.
