Lindsay Hoyle sparks Commons uproar
The number of MPs saying they no longer have confidence in Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle has jumped dramatically this morning.
Mr Speaker is fighting for his career today after unprecedented scenes in parliament yesterday, which saw yelling, conflict, walk-outs and demands of resignation.
Sir Lindsay sparked fury yesterday lunchtime, when he announced he would be breaking centuries of Commons procedures to allow a vote on a Labour amendment to the SNP’s divisive Gaza ceasefire motion.
Sir Lindsay was warned by the chamber’s most senior constitutional boffin, the Clerk, that this was against the rules and he would not have his support in making the unprecedented move.
Both the Tories and SNP are furious with the Speaker: the Tories for his breaking of the rules; the SNP for allowing Labour to hijack their big day in Parliament and undermine the point of their motion.

Sir Keir is also facing accusations that he and other Labour MPs bullied Sir Lindsay, a Labour speaker, into making the enormous concession.
Despite returning to the Chamber yesterday evening to make a heartfelt apology, as of this morning 50 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion voicing no confidence in the Speaker.
This is up from the 33 who had signed it by close of play yesterday.
The EDM, sparked by senior Tory Will Wragg, echoes the coup against 2009 Speaker Michael Martin.
Then, 22 MPs backed an EDM voicing no confidence in the Speaker, and he quit just two days later.
