There are rumours Boris Johnson could make a return to the Conservative Party (Image: Getty)
Boris Johnson could return to the Conservative Party and potentially to Parliament as a part of a secret plot to turn around Tory fortunes.
The former Prime Minister, 59, is currently not a serving MP after he resigned from his Uxbridge and South Ruislip seat in June last year.

However, as the Tories lag behind Labour in the polls and concerns over a wipeout at the next general election loom, there are rumours that Mr Johnson may be enticed back into the political fold.
The alleged plan could involve Mr Johnson taking the place of a current Tory candidate in an area likely to vote Conservative this year. It comes as right-wing Reform UK, led by Richard Tice, is surging in the polls.

While the constituency’s current MP, John Howell, recently announced he was stepping down, the candidate set to run for victory in Henley and Thame is Caroline Newton. Ms Newton previously served as assistant director of the Greater London Authority when Mr Johnson was mayor.
Although, there is no guarantee Ms Newton will withdraw her candidacy to make way for Mr Johnson, the potential for him to make a return to Parliament through a safe seat is considered a possibility, The Telegraph reports.
Mr Johnson’s mooted return comes as the Tories fall behind Labour in the polls and current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak continues to see a rebellion as more and more serving MPs say they won’t run at the next election. One backbencher said: “There are many in the party who don’t think we have a hope in hell of winning unless Boris comes back.”

Mr Johnson’s potential return has been welcomed by allies of the former Prime Minister. Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg commented: “Boris is the Conservative Party’s most effective campaigner so his support would be a Tory tonic.”
Conservative MP Paul Bristow added: It seems the Prime Minister also thinks we should bring back Boris. He is a great campaigner and galvanising figure for Conservatives. He obviously has a role to play.”
Asked if he would welcome Mr Johnson back into the party, Mr Sunak said: I’m proud of the work we did together. And we worked well together for a long time.”
However, Mr Sunak caveated: “In the end there are, you know, well-documented differences…”

Pollsters have warned that Tory support in rural areas is collapsing after the Budget disappointed and MPs for these constituencies say their constituents may abandon the Conservatives and vote for alternative parties instead.
Speaking to the Express, Conservative MP Greg Smith said: “It is vital we have a big offer for all rural people, from supporting farmers to ensuring communications -infrastructure like mobile and broadband works and healthcare provision is easily accessible.
“Rural Britain is the heart of Britain and we must re-earn the trust that only Conservatives truly understand and care for our countryside.”
