Theresa May has revealed she will be stepping down as MP for Maidenhead at this year’s General Election.
The former Prime Minister revealed the news to her local paper, the Maidenhead Advertiser, saying she has taken the “difficult decision” to retire from frontline politics after a marathon 27 years representing the Home Counties constituency.

She said she wanted to focus on causes close to her heart moving forward, including her work on the Global Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.
Mrs May said: ”It has been an honour and a privilege to serve everyone in the Maidenhead constituency as the Member of Parliament for the last 27 years”.
“Being an MP is about service to one’s constituents and I have always done my best to ensure that I respond to the needs of local people and the local area.”

The top Tory is now the 60th Conservative MP to announce they will be quitting at the next election.
Mrs May, 67, held several high-profile positions in the Conservative Party government, before entering Government as Home Secretary under David Cameron.
Her star rose as she shone at the notoriously difficult job, ending up becoming the longest-serving Home Secretary for over 60 years.
She eventually made it all the way to the top, being coronated as Prime Minister in 2016 following Mr Cameron’s resignation, and the chaos implosion of her main rivals Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Andrea Leadsom.
Despite achieving unrivalled levels of popularity during her first year of the job, the disastrous snap General Election campaign of 2017 saw her lose seats and authority, being forced to limp on for another two years without a secure Brexit mandate.
She failed three times in persuading MPs to support her compromised Brexit deal, eventually delivering a tearful resignation statement on the steps of No. 10 in 2019, and ushering in Boris Johnson to finish the difficult job.

Both before, during and after her tenure as Prime Minister, Mrs May has taken pride in her role as a diligent local constituency MP.
During her No. 10 years, she would dedicate whole days every week to campaigning in Maidenhead, despite her other time demands.
Unlike David Cameron, Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, the former Prime Minister has stayed and been active in the House of Commons since she stood down, holding the Government to account on everything from Brexit to Partygate.
Not a known public performer, Mrs May won plaudits for her touching and amusing tribute to Queen Elizabeth II following her passing in 2022.

Mrs May reflected on her reputation as a dedicated local MP in her resignation statement, saying: “An MP is about service to one’s constituents and I have always done my best to ensure that I respond to the needs of local people and the local area”.
“Since stepping down as Prime Minister I have enjoyed being a backbencher again and having more time to work for my constituents and champion causes close to my heart including most recently launching a Global Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.

“These causes have been taking an increasing amount of my time.
“Because of this, after much careful thought and consideration, I have realised that, looking ahead, I would no longer be able to do my job as an MP in the way I believe is right and my constituents deserve.”
“I have therefore taken the difficult decision to stand down at the next General Election.”
