David Lammy has been slammed as a massive hypocrite after attacking Boris Johnson and the Tories following revelations about the former PM’s trip to Venezuela.
Mr Johnson made headlines yesterday after it emerged he took a secret flight to meet President Maduro, acting as a useful “back channel” with the autocrat to relay British calls for him to support Ukraine over Russia.

Since 2018 the British Foreign Office has not accepted the legitimacy of President Maduro, whose opposition to free and fair elections has led to him being labelled a dictator.
However Mr Johnson flew to meet him last month for unofficial talks, during which he made a demand to the president to allow a free and fair election.
It’s understood Lord Cameron was made aware of the meeting before it took place, and Mr Sunak is increasingly happy with Mr Johnson’s unofficial foreign policy role.

However this morning the Labour Party has written to Lord Cameron demanding an urgent explanation of the meeting, accusing Mr Johnson of undermining “the coherence of our international approach”.
Piling on the pressure, shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy claimed the Tories “cannot be relied upon to present a coherent face to the outside world”.
Mr Lammy’s attack has sparked accusations of hypocrisy, however, after it emerged he himself undermined Britain’s foreign policy position in 2019 while trying to reverse the result of the EU referendum.
In October 2019, Mr Lammy went on a trip to Brussels with fellow Remainers Vince Cable, Dominic Grieve, Caroline Lucas and Liz Saville Roberts to “make the case for a Brexit extension to give time for a referendum on the EU ahead of the European Council summit”.
The begging trip by the Remainer MPs was in direct contradiction to then-PM Boris Johnson’s position that we must leave the EU on October 31.

Mr Lammy told the Mirror: “I am clear I will fight tooth and nail to remain with the European Union.”
A senior Tory source has now told the Express that Mr Lammy’s criticism of Mr Johnson’s trip to Venezuela is the “height of hypocrisy”.
They said: “It is the height of hypocrisy that while he was shuttling back and forth to Brussels to run parallel negotiations with Brussels, he is now criticising any politicians who talk to foreign leaders".
“This is a weak attempt by Labour to keep this in the news and bodes very badly for David Lammy as Foreign Secretary should he ever be handed the position.”
Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg added: "It is extraordinary that someone who wanted to kowtow to the EU and tried to undermine the country’s negotiating position should criticise Boris for a brief courtesy call".

Shadow foreign minister Anna McMorrin also demands to know whether Mr Johnson was given a briefing by civil servants and whether he was provided with use of any official resources.
Ms McMorrin fumes: “Given your unelected position in the Lords, Britain already has a Foreign Secretary who cannot be held to account by the House of Commons”.
“It does not need Boris Johnson freelancing in the shadows.”
