Jeremy Corbyn claimed he will take legal action against Nigel Farage, accusing him of telling "disgusting and malicious" lies about him.

In a surprise tweet this afternoon, the former Labour leader said he has asked his lawyers to begin suing the GB News presenter, after calls from his supporters to take action.

Mr Corbyn said: "I have asked my lawyers to take the first steps in commencing legal proceedings against Nigel Farage, following a highly defamatory statement about me. We are a movement for peace — and we cannot stand by and let these disgusting and malicious lies go unchallenged.”

While the left-winger did not specify which remarks he had taken umbrage with, the announcement came four days after supporters of Mr Corbyn encouraged him to take action after Mr Farage appeared to claim the former Labour leader believes in a "secret Jewish shadow government”.

He told viewers: "I said the Jewish community in North America had been massively successful in law, in business and yes they did campaign for what they wanted, they did it within the law, they did it quite successfully.

"But I was never a subscriber to the mad-cat conspiracy theory that the Jews run the world. But I'll tell you who was: yes, Jeremy Corbyn the Labour leader that you supported!”.

One left-wing Twitter user who helped propel the clip to viral prominence last week claimed the allegation is an “Ofcom violation” and should be investigated.

They also encourage users to complain about the clip to Ofcom.

Both Mr Farage and Mr Corbyn have been approached for comment.

The news of Mr Corbyn’s legal action came just hours after Ofcom announced a separate investigation into Nigel Farage.

The broadcast regulator has said it will look into whether Mr Farage is really a politician masquerading as a TV presenter, ahead of crunch local elections in May.

In its initial statement on X (formerly Twitter) Ofcom said that it was investigating "whether Farage, GB News (17 January), and [former Conservative chairman] Sir Jake Berry, TalkTV (12 December), broke due impartiality rules and rules preventing politicians acting as news presenters.”

Responding to the news from Ofcom, Nigel Farage fumed: “For 2.5 years there has been no problem. Why now?”

The claims against him are based on him still being honorary president of Reform UK although he has not taken an active role in the party since stepping down as leader before he joined GB News.

Mr Farage and his supporters have questioned why it has taken Ofcom two and a half years to have a problem with him having breaking news on his show.

Previous complaints have been about current Tory MPs including Esther McVey, Philip Davies and Jacob Rees-Mogg who have all worked for GB News.

An Ofcom spokesperson: “We are investigating whether this programme broke our rules requiring news and current affairs to be presented with due impartiality, and preventing politicians from acting as news presenters.”

The main problem will be that if Ofcom find against Mr Farage he will be barred from presenting during a general election under broadcast rules.
