The UK is now the “Hollywood of Europe” with its creative industries growing at twice the rate of the rest of the economy, according to Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer.

International blockbusters such as Barbie and The Batman have recently been shot in the UK, and increased tax relief has been unveiled to turbo-charge the production of home-grown cinema and support studios.
The Government intends to grow the creative industries by £50billion by 2030.
Ms Frazer takes pride in the UK’s “soft power” at a time when the West is confronted with an aggressive Russia and the rise of China.

She believes it is important the UK -continues to have a “strong voice” and “world-class culture”.
The minister said: “We’re sharing our culture across the world and people are paying to see an insight into our values as the UK across the globe.”
Pointing to the nation’s success as a -musical superpower, she said: “We’ve -obviously had Adele and Amy Winehouse, Elton John and The Beatles – a huge number of fantastic artists.
“What many people say to me is there is a freedom, a way of thinking and innovation in the UK that is unique to the UK.
“You get so much more creativity here than you do in some other countries – even than in quite a lot of Western countries.”

She said music executives tell her that their international counterparts ask: “How can we be more like the UK?” In a bid to ensure a new generation of British independent films enjoys the success of Bend It Like Beckham and The King’s Speech, movies with a budget of up to £15million will qualify for 53 per cent tax credit.
“We are already leading the world in many of our creative industries,” said Ms Frazer. “We are the Hollywood of Europe.”
More than £1billion in extra tax relief for the creative sectors is planned during the next five years.
Ms Frazer, 51, argues it makes sense for the Government to support the arts at a time when the NHS is under financial pressure.
“We’re funding both culture and the NHS,” she said, adding: “The creative industries are growing at double the rate of the rest of the economy so it’s an economic powerhouse.
“It also helps people with wellbeing, it helps with their mental health – creativity and the creative industries are hugely powerful.”
She gave one example of how innovation that is pioneered in the gaming industry has wider benefits
Ms Frazer says visual effects technology – which will be boosted with further tax relief – is being harnessed in the health sector. Video game designers working with Cambridge University researchers have collaborated to allow tumours to be seen in three dimensions using virtual reality.

She is also quick to stress support for the arts goes far beyond London, pointing to £10million for National Museums Liverpool and £2.6million for V&A Dundee.
With an election looming, Ms Frazer is relishing the chance to defend the Tory record on culture.
She said: “It is no accident that we are world-leading. That’s not just come about because we have brilliant people, although we do.
“It’s also because for 10 years the Conservative government has backed the creative industries, has backed them with tax reliefs every year which have contributed to the growing economy and to allowing these creative geniuses to do their work.
