JOHOR BARU: A Johor MIC leader has announced she will run for the national Wanita chief's post.

Johor Wanita MIC chief N. Saraswati said she is prepared to take on the role, having over 30 years of political experience.

“After some discussion with party members and leaders, I have (decided to take) the opportunity to compete for the post in the upcoming term.

“I have been actively involved in various areas in my 33 years in politics. I believe I am ready to take on the role,” she told a press conference here on Friday (April 5).

She added that she has received approval from the party’s leadership to contest in the election, which is expected to be held next month.

“I hope to empower women in all areas, including careers, skills, education and entrepreneurship.

“I believe that my years in politics, coupled with my background in business and running a non-governmental organisation (NGO), will help me carry out my responsibilities as the party’s Wanita chief,” said Saraswati, who is also the Kemelah assemblyman.

Saraswati, who has been state Wanita MIC chief for six years, said she is also prepared to contest against the incumbent.

In the previous national Wanita MIC election in 2021, Datuk Mohana Muniandy won the post with some 2,550 votes against then-incumbent SJ Usha Nandhini.

Mohana, who was Wanita MIC chief between 2013 and 2018, opted not to defend the post in the party elections in 2018.
