Alastair Campbell's latest attack on the Tories has seen him publicly ridiculed after readers took to the community comments on X (formerly Twitter) to point out he was not telling the truth.

The former professional spin doctor turned Remainer podcaster, who infamously was involved in the "dodgy dossier" used to justify the Iraq war, claimed that clean water in Britain's rivers had only become a problem under the Tories since 2010 after Labour lost power.

He posted: "A reminder that when we had a Labour government you could swim in most seas and rivers without risking your health. Get this bloody government out. And keep them out."

But in a brutal putdown readers on X were quick to point out what he was saying was not true.

It turned out that Labour was as bad or even worse at keeping Britain's rivers clean.

One contributor noted: "This isn't true. The last Labour government was taken to the European court of justice for failing to stop thousands of tonnes of raw sewage pouring into the Thames."

The contributor posted a link to an article from 2009 when Gordon Brown was Prime Minister.

Another pointed out: "The sewage outflow monitoring scheme that is causing present-day concerns was put in place after Labour left office.

"There is no national data available about sewage pollution pre-2010. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence of pollution happening pre-1970s."

It means that it was the Conservative government, not Labour which put in place the means to ensure Britain's waterways are monitored for pollution levels.

Mr Campbell has in recent years also become infamous for his hatred of Brexit as well as the Tories.

In May last year, Brexiteer Alex Phillips spoke of her fear that Blair's former mouthpiece would assault her when they both appeared on BBC Newsnight Time together.

Mr Campbell has also been thrown out of the Labour Party after he admitted to voting Lib Dem because of that party's stance on Brexit.
