A leftwing commentator has ranted about people "going mad" about Nike's controversial "playful update" to the England flag saying those who don't like it are "political cannon fodder".
Appearing on the Jeremy Vine show on Channel 5 this morning, Marina Purkiss was animated in her dismissal of anyone pouring scorn on the change to the St George's flag on England's new football kit.

Sportswear giant Nike has faced criticism for altering the red cross by adding black, blue and purple to the horizontal section. It said the change "appears on the collar to unite and inspire".
Miss Purkiss said those who were upset about the flag change should think about UKIP or the Conservative Party who have used the British flag in their emblems.
Sneering at those who did not like the Nike version of the traditional red cross, which has included Sir Keir Starmer and the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Miss Purkiss continued: "You know what I'm going to say to you, you are political cannon fodder.

"This a brand just doing something a bit funky with a flag, it's not an attack on being English, on being patriotic, do you know what is an attack on being patriotic, or being English, the 2.6 million kids we've got in poverty."
Ms Purkiss told viewers not to get "angry" about the changes made to the ancient national symbol of England.
The Cross of St George has been the traditional flag of England since the time of the Crusades in the 11th century and is traditionally a red cross on a white background.

Reacting to the change of the colours by Nike on the recent football kit release, Rishi Sunak said "When it comes to our national flags, we shouldn't mess with them because they're a source of pride, identity, who we are, and they're perfect as they are."
Cross-party support for this view came from the Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who told The Sun the flag "is used by everybody, it is a unifier, it doesn't need to be changed".
"We just need to be proud of it. So I think they should just reconsider this and change it back."
Commenting on Ms Purkiss's words on the show this morning several viewers were quick to make their feelings known on X, formerly Twitter.
One person asked: "Out of interest Marina Purkiss have you ever watched England football?"
Another added: "Well I’m not going mad but it would be nice to see a red cross on a white background somewhere on the England shirt. I think that should be a given."
Someone else noted: "People should be going mad over the cost..£120 for a child's size. How much are the workers making them being paid?"
