Suella Braverman has lashed out at Labour after their Shadow Education Secretary doubled down on plans to whack private schools with a new tax.

Yesterday Ms Braverman accused the opposition of planning an “assault” on private schools, which far from helping Britain’s struggling economy will “only hammed the aspirational”.

The former Home Secretary accuses Labour of believing that the tax plans will “only impact millionaires and royalty”, but will in fact penalise hard-working families who are “training every sinew to give their children what they need”.

Labour has said they will levy 20% VAT on private school fees should they come to office, to fund improvements in state schools and recruit more teachers.

However, it’s been claimed that the tax raid could in fact cost taxpayers up to £1.6billion a year, amid warnings that the fee increase could force thousands of pupils out of the private sector and into the state sector.

If just 10-15% of private school pupils are forced into the state sector, Labour’s plan will raise no money at all, with significant costs being incurred if the figure rises to 25%.

A paper by the Adam Smith Institute also cited a similar policy from Greece, introduced in 2015, which led to the closure of smaller, independent schools and an acute shortage of teachers and schoolplaces in the state sector.

Ms Braverman has become a leading opponent of the proposed tax hike, warning Labour that the “clumsy attack” on private schools is “profoundly missing the point when it comes to education reform”.

Responding to Ms Braverman’s Sunday Telegraph column, Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said the Tories’ defence of private schools and the families that go there is “downright offensive to nine in ten parents in our country”.

She said: “Ambition and aspiration are for every family, not just those with money.

“Labour will end the private school tax breaks to invest in excellence for everyone.”

However this morning Ms Braverman hit back once more, accusing Ms Phillipson of peddling “absolute nonsense”.

She accused Labour of being the “downright offensive” ones, with their “vindictive attack on working families”.

She said: “This awful Labour idea won’t make state schools better. It will cost, not save, taxpayers’ money.”

She fumed: “It is happening because of ugly, intolerant prejudice.”

       Trending

Alternatively Ms Braverman has proposed a new scheme whereby state school pupils could choose to study particular subjects at private schools, “à la carte” style, which she believes would greatly increase social mixing and mobility.

Similarly the top Tory has called for teachers at private schools to be encouraged to teach at disadvantaged schools to share their intellect and experience.

She calls for a “righteous crusade” where children from all backgrounds can mix and learn from each other, and calls on independent schools to be at the vanguard of it.

Sir Keir Starmer has previously suggested that despite the tax hike, it will be up to the schools to choose whether to apply it to pupils’ fees.
