A massive project to revamp beaches at a favourite destination for British sun seekers and golfers is underway with nearly ￡12million of investment.

       Quarteira in the Algarve region of Portugal is much-loved for its golden sands, warm seas and the manicured greens that make it home to the Portugal Masters golf tournament.

       Now a large section of boardwalk on the popular beach of Praia do Forte Novo is set to be rebuilt after it fell into disrepair and became damaged in recent stormy weather.

       According to local website, The Portugal Resident, work to replenish the beach areas between the Quarteira seafront and Anc？o beach has already been launched by the Portuguese Environmental Agency (APA) and other bodies.

       The publication said the project would also be helping shore up defences on Trafal and Loulé Velho beaches which have been damaged by erosion.

       Quarteira has been welcoming large numbers of British tourists since the 1970s and is home to several golf courses. It is also a short walk from the neighbouring resort of Villamoura, which hosts the Portugal Masters at the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course.

       According to The Telegraph, the region around the resort town is also famous for peri peri chicken recipes but also for excellent seafood dishes.

       In recent years the town has become a popular holiday destination for Portuguese holidaymakers, as well as foreigners.

       Travel website Algarve Tips says the town "used to be a small fishing village, but has turned into a holiday resort with high-rise apartments near the sea".

       It added: "The town has a great location, in between Faro and Albufeira. Quarteira has a beautiful beach, which is the main attraction of the town. Behind the beach you can find a splendid promenade filled with palm trees."

       Quarteira Beach is the main stretch of sand in the area and is over a mile long. The sea is relatively calm and the beach is divided into several parts with piers made of stone.

       The Algarve Tourist reports in the summer months Quarteira has a "lively and social atmosphere". Flights to nearby Faro Airport are operated by a number of airports and carriers across the UK, with prices starting from as little as under ￡50 for a round trip.
