China faces major economic threat as Washington warns 'full sanctions' on table

China faces a considerable financial blow as the United States warned it is ready to impose "dull blocking sanctions" to stop Beijing from supplying military components to Russia.

The People's Republic of China (PRC) has maintained an officially neutral stance on the ongoing war in Ukraine but has slowly been strengthening its alliance with Moscow.

Despite rejecting claims it has provided military equipment to Russia, multiple intelligence reports have suggested Beijing has been supplying its partner with raw materials and components to continue manufacturing weapons to employ against Kyiv.

But Congress this week has warned it is ready to impose severe sanctions to cripple the "no-limits" alliance between China and Russia to support its allies in Ukraine.

Lawmakers in Washington DC have introduced a new bipartisan bill that would hit any Chinese military firm found to be supplying material to Russia with harsh sanctions.

The threat comes as China's economy experiences considerable struggles and a blow to its military industry – which has found an eager client in Russia – would exacerbate its financial issues.

China's military sector has steadily increased its yield in recent years, with eight of its top defence companies reporting a combined £85.5 billion ($108 billion) revenue in 2023.

Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, a co-sponsor of the bill, said on Wednesday: "Any company aiding and abetting the horrors in Ukraine – as the Chinese defence industrial complex has done – deserves to experience the full force of American sanctions.

"It’s time to put a financial cost on the CCP’s no-limits partnership with Russia.”

The so-called No Limits Act would give Chinese military companies 180 days to stop doing business with Russia to avoid the "full blocking sanctions."

The legislation would direct the Department of Defense to identify export-controlled technologies that could be redirected through China to reach the Russian market.

The bill reached Congress days after an intelligence report showed China has been aiding Russia to expand its military capacities across multiple sectors.

One official said: "Russia is undertaking its most ambitious defence expansion since the Soviet era and on a faster timeline than we believed possible early on in this conflict.

"Our view is that one of the most game-changing moves available to us at this time to support Ukraine is to persuade the PRC to stop helping Russia reconstitute its military-industrial base.

Speaking to The Defense Post, they added: "Russia would struggle to sustain its war effort without PRC inputs."

The latest estimates suggest Beijing sourced around 90 percent of the $900 million in machine tools Russia imported in the last quarter of 2023.

The PRC has also proved to be a crucial supplier of microelectronic exports Moscow needs to produce military equipment ranging from missiles to tanks.
