BUTTERWORTH: The Royal Malaysian Customs thwarted a drug trafficking attempt following the seizure of some 30kg of methamphetamine worth about RM1mil.

       Penang Customs director Roselan Ramli said the drugs were found in two bags containing 30 packets labelled as tea that had been left under a tree at a gated community in Bukit Gambir, Penang on April 4.

       "Acting on information from the public, a team of narcotics officers from our intelligence unit went to the housing area to monitor any trafficking activities.

       "After eight hours of waiting, it detected no signs of movement in the area," he told a press conference at the state Customs warehouse here on Friday (April 19).

       Roselan said checks of the area then led to the discovery of the bags.

       The packets contained crystals believed to be methamphetamine, he added.

       He said police were still looking for the suspected traffickers and that the case was being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
