US President Joe Biden has suggested his uncle was “eaten by cannibals.”

Biden spoke about his late uncle during a campaign stop at the United Steelworkers headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday.

The President's uncle, who he called “Uncle Bosie,” died while he was serving in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, the president said.

Speaking before a crowd of supporters on Wednesday, Biden said: “When I left Scranton today, I wanted to go to the war memorial of veterans who died during World War II. I wanted to see the name of my Uncle Bosie…

“My uncle became an Army Air Corps and flew those single engine planes as reconnaissance over war zones. He got shot down in New Guinea. They never found the body because there used to be a lot of cannibals in that part of New Guinea…”

Biden made the same comments to reporters when he landed in Pittsburgh earlier on Wednesday.

He said: “…They never recovered his body but the government went back, when I went down there, and they checked and found some parts of the plane and the like…”

In his speech at the union headquarters on Wednesday, Biden also used the opportunity to make a dig at Republican opponent Donald Trump.

The president said: “I was reminded of what my opponent said in Paris not too long ago. When they asked him to go visit American veteran grave sites, he said no because they were all ‘suckers’ and ‘losers.’”

So far, Biden has used his three-day campaign across Pennsylvania as a chance to call for higher taxes on the rich and cast Trump as an out-of-touch elitist.

When he wasn’t making digs at Trump, Biden appeared to savor his trip down memory lane in his hometown of working-class Scranton. He lingered longer than expected at his childhood home on Tuesday, where he posed for photos with children in the backyard.

Biden is looking to gain ground in a key battleground state while Trump spends much of the week in a New York City courtroom for his first criminal trial. Biden will head to Philadelphia on Thursday.

Biden’s team has fully embraced the contrast of the former president sequestered in a courtroom while the current president has free rein to focus on economic issues that are top of mind for voters.

However, the juxtaposition will become less helpful if Trump soaks up the country’s attention during the first-ever criminal trial of a former president.
