Labour has said it will allow small boat migrants into the asylum system - just as the Rwanda plan is showing signs of working.

Individuals who have arrived in the UK illegally since March last year have been blocked from submitting claims under a law passed by the Tories.

It has led to tens of thousands of people being stuck in limbo as they are yet to be deported because the Rwanda scheme is not up and running.

A Labour spokesman indicated that those arrivals - currently around 90,000 and expected to rise to more than 115,000 by the end of this year - will be entitled to claim asylum if the party wins the general election.

The spokesman said: “The most important thing is that we speed up the way in which claims are being processed, the way in which we then have returns agreements in place and deal with the backlog that there is.

“The thing that is unsustainable at the moment is the amount of the backlog that there is within the system.”

The Tories warned Labour's plan would encourage more small boat crossings.

Conservative Party chairman Richard Holden said: “As if voting against our measures to stop the boats 139 times wasn’t bad enough, Labour now want to introduce a policy that is effectively an advertisement for migrants to come to the UK.
