Incredible footage of lightning striking the Volcán del Fuego, one of the world's most active volcanoes, has been shared online.

Volcán del Fuego, found in southern Guatamala, erupted devastatingly in 2018, before erupting again in 2021, 2022 and 2023. However, its most recent eruption coincided with a lightning storm, which saw the spewing volcano struck by bolts of electricity.

In an astonishing video, shared on X, crowds of people can be heard exclaiming in disbelief at what they were seeing with their eyes.

Several bolts of lightning appeared to strike the crater of the volcano as lava leapt out of it. With each lightning strike, the sky was illuminated and met with a chorus of "wows".

Social media users reacting to the clip were seemingly as staggered as those that witnessed the spectacle live. One user wrote: "Omg! Now that’s an unforgettable light show. Dangerous but beautiful to watch."

While another said: "Wow, I would be too scared to even be there!!! YIKES!!!!"

Referencing Serbian-American electrical engineer Nikola Tesla, a third commenter said: "Whoa Nikola Tesla would have a field day".

In 2018, nearly 200 people tragically lost their lives when the volcano exploded with lava.

A pyroclastic flow - which is a cloud containing a high-density mix of hot lava blocks, pumice, ash and volcanic gas - cascaded down the volcano and swept through villages sitting beneath it.
