Home Secretary James Cleverly has blasted Labour MPs after not a single one turned up for an important Commons debate on illegal migration.
Immigration Minister Tom Pursglove was called to the Commons this lunchtime to speak on yesterday's ruling by a judge that parts of the Government’s Rwanda plan will not be applicable in Northern Ireland, as they clash with the Windsor Framework and the ECHR.

While plenty of Tory MPs, along with SNP and other opposition MPs, turned up to participate in the important Urgent Question, photos have now been shared showing the Labour benches completely empty, bar a few frontbench spokesmen.
Tory MP Paul Bristow fumed: “Labour can’t even be bothered to turn up and discuss illegal migration in the House of Commons today. Not a single backbencher”.
Home Secretary James Cleverly added that those who failed to turn up included Natalie Elphicke, who was seen as a right-wing immigration hardliner in the Tory Party before her defection last week.

Mr Cleverly blasted: “Their first opportunity to do so after their “major” announcement on Friday”.
“Labour; empty benches, empty promises!”
While their MPs refused to turn up for work, Minister Tom Pursglove tore into Labour’s position on illegal migrants.
“The fact is that they have absolutely no credible plan to stop the flow of people coming across the Channel. When it comes to the very scant alternative that [Labour] has proffered to the House again today as the opposition frontbench’s position and offering to the country to tackle illegal migration, I can again tell him that we’ve already doubled funding for the National Crime Agency for immigration crime purposes.

“We already have thousands of officials working on this work as part of the Migration and Borders Directorate.
"What his policy means in practice is a migrant amnesty, letting thousands of illegal migrants who shouldn’t be here stay in the UK indefinitely.

“They would allow tens of thousands of claims to be lodged outside the UK, undoing all the progress that we have made in addressing the asylum backlog.”
He accused Labour of “trying to take the public for fools”.
Criticism of the Government came from Tory MPs instead of Labour MPs, with former Home Secretary Suella Braverman claiming that Mr Sunak’s celebrated Windsor Framework Agreement had crumpled on its first impact with reality.

Ms Braverman said that the judge’s decision to dis-apply the Rwanda scheme in Northern Ireland must be read to mean that Northern Ireland is to be treated as part of the EU.
“I believed the assurances made to me at the time, but isn’t it now patently clear that the Windsor Framework has operated in a way to undermine our sovereignty, to undermine Northern Ireland’s place within the UK, and has fundamentally failed upon its first contact with reality?”
Mr Pursglove insisted that the Government is determined to appeal the judgement, and called for consistent application of the Rwanda Act across the United Kingdom.
