The surprising city with more £1m homes than any of Cornwall's famous seaside towns

Cornwall is a place that the rich - and often famous - flock to for properties by the sea. So it perhaps comes as a surprise that its city of Truro is home to more properties in the £1m bracket than any other in the county - despite not overlooking the beautiful Cornwall coast.

Falling short of taking the title were the luxury postcodes of Rick Stein’s favourite Padstow, Lord David Cameron’s summer getaway spot of Rock and other well-heeled areas such as Polzeath, Falmouth and Fowey, all with grand homes and sea views.

However Truro is still within a stone’s throw of the seaside - as it’s just a 10 minute car drive to Loe beach in Feock - and boasts an array of other impressive attributes.

Cornwall is very proud of its only city - which has a population of just 23,047 - and explains more on its official tourism website Visitcornwall.com.

As well as an absolute wealth of places to shop and dine, Truro also boasts stunning architecture. It said: “Cornwall’s one and only city radiates a chic, urban charm that’s reflected in endless shopping opportunities and some of the best restaurants and bars in the county.

“Once a Norman castle stood where the present day Crown Court is located and Truro thrived as a port for many years.

“The prosperity of the late 18th and early 19th continues to this day and can be seen today in the elegant town houses that line the city’s streets. Centre stage is Truro’s impressive gothic revival cathedral that towers over the town.”

It’s easy to escape to its stunning surrounding countryside - and, handily for some, there’s a direct train from Truro to London Paddington.

There were more than 14,000 houses sold for over £1 million across England and Wales between the start of April 2023 and the end of March 2024.

Almost half of them (49 percent) were in London. However, 92 houses in Cornwall were sold for over a million in the last 12 months. A total of 18 of those were in Truro, 11 were in Falmouth, another 11 in Wadebridge, nine in St Ives and seven in Fowey.

The most expensive house sold in the county over the past year was Pieds Dans L'eau in Fowey. The property cost its owners £4.35 million when it was purchased in November. Bishops Rock in Wadebridge was the next most expensive at £3.90 million.

Meanwhile, Penrich in Padstow and Waterhouse in Wadebridge were both sold for £3.50 million, and 44 Sea Road at Carlyon Bay, St Austell, was sold for £3.15 million.

The most expensive home sold in England and Wales over the last 12 months though was an apartment at Ashburton Place in Mayfair, London. The flat cost its new owners £38.64 million when it was bought in June.
