Tory members have lashed out against Rishi Sunak’s “ill judged" decision to call a snap general election on July 4.

Social media posts from a private Facebook page called Conservatives Party Members Group on Facebook, for verified members, showed people turning against the Prime Minister.

The decision to call an election was described by one member who served as a Conservative ouncillor for ten years as “seriously ill judged.”

The post said: “If we lose, when we lose, there should be no knighthood for Rishi”.

The Facebook group has 3,000 members including MPs Andrew Rosindell, Joy Morrisey, John Penrose and Virginia Crosby.

To join the page, people need to provide proof of Tory membership and which association group they are a part of.

One member said that Mr Sunak had “done a Theresa May” by sharing an article titled “Why holding a snap general election in July is a huge mistake for Rishi Sunak”.

One member expressed fury at Mr Sunak’s failure to fulfil his promise of making the Rwanda plan work.

They said: “Well Sunak you have got out of that promise. Where will you be after the election, one thing for sure you will not be the PM”.

Posts from the group also highlight members’ growing worry about voters switching to Reform.

One user said: ‘I am trying to stop many of my friends from voting Reform.”

There were also concerns that focusing an election around Rwanda flights was a “terrible strategy”.

The member said: “The electorate will just see this as Sunak admitting that the plan hasn’t worked”.

Meanwhile the Prime Minister has said he is “pumped up” and enjoying himself on the campaign trail despite a difficult start that saw him encounter several hiccups on a whistlestop two-day tour of the four nations.

His trip included a visit to the Titanic Quarter in Belfast, which invited undesirable “sinking ship” comparisons with his party’s fortunes, as well as a brewery in Wales where he made a footballing gaffe about the Euros.

Mr Sunak spent Saturday meeting local veterans in his North Yorkshire constituency of Richmond before joining activists on the doorstep in south-west London.

He is understood to be continuing the trail in the south east while Rachel Reeves will give a stump speech to party members in West Yorkshire as she heads out for Labour on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Sir Ed Davey will launch the Liberal Democrats battlebus in a marginal constituency in the so-called Tory blue wall of southern England.
