However, while the King has been seen out paying his respects, making speeches and chatting with veterans and world leaders alike, he has allowed William to deputise for him during the keynote international commemoration at Omaha Beach.
A source told the Daily Mail's Rebecca English: "Given his other commitments on the day, it was simply advised that the international event later in the afternoon could be a step too far at this stage."
The insider added: "His Majesty is, of course, delighted that the Prince of Wales will be attending to represent the nation in his place."

Although he has been making a return to public life, it is still necessary for the King to hold back a little as he continues with the gruelling treatment.
Ms English revealed that His Majesty arrived in Portsmouth yesterday - halfway through proceedings - whereas if he had been in full health, he would have been there from start to finish.
According to the royal expert, his doctors have been trying to "prioritise and protect" his progress, which remains "encouraging" but he is still not at the end of the road yet.
The King and Queen were chatting to veterans in a marquee in Ver-sur-Mer earlier today (June 6), with His Majesty telling those gathered that he is "doing well".

As he made his way around the tables, the King sat down at one beside Ronald Hendrey, 98, of Clacton-on-Sea, who asked about his health.
Mr Hendrey said: "He was very nice, he listened to what I was saying and took it in. I asked him how he was doing. He told me he is doing well."
During an emotional speech, the King addressed the veterans and conveyed his "profound sense of gratitude" to those who had served on the Normandy beaches.

"On the beaches of Normandy, on the seas beyond and in the skies overhead, our armed forces carried out their duty with a humbling sense of resolve and determination, qualities so characteristic of that remarkable wartime generation."
