The thousands of royal fans lining the streets for Trooping the Colour this Saturday will likely require their waterproofs and an umbrella as forecasts warn of showers during the event.

Trooping the Colour is a key royal event that is held to mark the birthday of the monarch, although it is held in June in the hope of avoiding adverse weather conditions.

It dates back centuries, having first been made an annual event in 1760.

An impressive procession comprised of 1,600 parading soldiers, 400 musicians and more than 200 horses will make their way from the Horse Guards Parade down the Mall, ending at Buckingham Palace where the royals will make an appearance on the balcony.

This year's event is also significant as King Charles continues his recovery from cancer.

Sadly, it appears the weather may put a small dampener on the event as WXCharts' weather maps show.

The event starts at 10am and finishes by 12:25pm. The forecaster predicts that the rain will be falling as early as 9am, and could even start during the procession.

The Met Office has a similar forecast, warning of a 40 percent chance of rain at 10am on Saturday, just as the event is getting underway.

They add: "Sunny intervals changing to light showers by late morning."

WXCharts shows the rain moving out of London at around 6pm.

The Met Office currently says there is a 60 percent chance of rain at 1pm, a 60 percent chance at 4pm, and a 40 percent chance at 7pm.

Despite the potentially gloomy weather conditions, King Charles has said he is looking forward to the event.

His Majesty, who is Colonel in Chief of the seven Guards regiments of the Household Division, inspected the guardsmen and officers on parade on Monday afternoon.

The monarch then said: “It has been a remarkable 84 years since my grandfather, King George VI, presented new Colours to the Second Battalion Irish Guards in Wellington Barracks during the opening months of the Second World War.

“After that terrible war, whose anniversaries we are in the midst of commemorating, the Second Battalion was placed in suspended animation but, I am delighted to say, has been reinstated.”
