The Tories have issued an urgent warning to pro-unionist voters, claiming that a vote for Reform UK will hand the SNP victory in knife-edge seats across the country.

The Conservatives are targeting 12 seats at next week's General Election including the six they already hold and another six where they are the main challengers.

However, with the vote set to be very close fears have been raised in the party that even a dozen votes for Reform could cost them.

The SNP manifesto has pledged to immediately begin negotiations with Westminster on independence if it returns a majority of SNP MPs to the House of Commons. The Conservatives are urging people to remember that their right-wing rivals have included candidates who supported independence in 2014.

Key constituencies such as Gordon and Buchan could come down to the wire between the Conservatives and the SNP while many others face tough challenges to hold onto the seats.

The SNP manifesto has pledged to immediately begin negotiations with Westminster on independence if it returns a majority of SNP MPs to the House of Commons. The Conservatives are urging people to remember that their right-wing rivals have included candidates who supported independence in 2014.

Reform's deputy chairman in Scotland David Kirkwood previously voted for the SNP, as did Dundee candidate Vicky McCann, while Kris Callander, the hopeful for Gordan and Buchan, is the latest of Reform's Westminster hopefuls to say he voted yes to independence.

He admitted in an interview he had not always been a “hardline unionist”.

Appearing on BBC Radio Scotland, Mr Callander was asked whether his party could be more “flexible” on the constitutional question.

He said: “I think we’re very much part of the UK, and we see Scotland as part of the UK.

“I say that as someone who voted for independence in 2014. So it’s not like I’ve always been a hard-line unionist on this matter.”
