Former Tory MP Marcus Fysh urged fellow Conservatives to "move on” as he dramatically resigned from the party just hours after losing his seat in Yeovil in the latest elections.

In a tweet, Fysh declared his departure from the Conservatives, criticising the party's current state after losing his Yeovil seat to the Lib Dem candidate Adam Dance by a majority of more than 12,000 votes.

Hours after his bruising General Election defeat, he wrote on social media on Saturday evening: ”I hereby resign from @Conservatives. It's dead. No chance of ever being electable again with its current non-Conservative Parliamentary composition. Move on. Let's do something else."

The election saw Labour secure more than 400 seats in a total landslide, while the Conservatives suffered a significant defeat, falling well below their previous low of 156 MPs set in 1906.
