Conservatives are out - and almost immediately Keir Starmer and wife Victoria arrived at No.10 (Image: Getty)
One thing’s for sure - it’s all change for British politics. The Conservatives have been unceremoniously booted out of office and Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer has now officially taken up his role as Prime Minister.

But as well as his new role - Sir Keir and his family are also on the move, as they are welcome to live at Number 10 Downing Street if they so wish. The famous address has been the official residence of British Prime Ministers since 1735.
So is there an official timescale on how quickly former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his family need to leave so Keir and his family can move in?
In short, no. There is no set legal timeframe in which a former PM has to leave Number 10. It is usually, however, within the first few days of an election result. And it’s thought that Mr Sunak will move out of Number 10 immediately.

In front of cameras, Rishi and his wife Akshata Murty calmly walked away from the podium after the ex-Prime Minister made his departing speech. Within hours Sir Keir Starmer and his wife, Lady Victoria Starmer, were waving on the doorstep of No.10.
Surely no move is as quick and seamless as that? So what exactly goes on behind the grand door of No.10?

Rishi's home isn't just at Downing Street
Mr Sunak has a huge residence in his Richmond and Northallerton constituency, where he has been re-elected to be MP. It could be that Mr Sunak and his family have got ahead of the curve, and started packing up ahead of last night’s defeat (albeit very discreetly).
Sir Keir has not yet revealed if he will follow Mr Sunak's lead and live at Number 10. The other option is to take the larger flat above Number 11 instead.
The new PM has, however, already got a feel for his potential new home as after he made a speech on the steps of Downing Street.
He said: "Our country has voted decisively for change, for national renewal and a return of politics to public service."

He added he wanted to "end the era of noisy performance, tread more lightly on your lives, and unite our country". Staff then applauded as he walked through the door of Number 10.
