Brexiteer Steve Baker was defeated in Wycombe, Buckinghamshire by a Labour majority of around 5,000 votes, but said he was “glad” at the result.

After praising his campaign team and commiserating those who’d lose jobs as a result of the defeat he shocked BBC anchor Clive Myrie with his personal reaction.

“For me personally: Thank god I’m free, I’m glad,” he told the newsreader

A stunned Myrie paused for a moment before replying: “You’re glad? Explain that.”

Baker then revealed he’d “been doing this for duty” and described the toll being a member of Parliament had taken on him.

“It’s long hours, a lot of abuse, my house is now like Fort Knox and enough’s enough,” he told the broadcaster.

“I would have been glad to continue and serve the people of Wycombe and it was often a joy to do my duty, but I’m going to be honest with people: It was an honour. But, my goodness, it’s good to have it behind me and I will not be coming back.”

Baker was accused earlier in the campaign of “giving up” after deciding to jet off on pre-planned holiday to Greece despite Rishi Sunak calling a surprise snap election.

He was then mocked on social media when the BBC revealed live on air that its analysis of exit polls suggested he had a less than one percent chance of winning his seat.

But Baker, who was a candidate to replace Boris Johnson as Conservative Party leader in 2022, said the strain of being an MP had become too much.

He pointed out that Myrie’s co-host Laura Kuenssberg had got a taste for his circumstances whilst following him around with a camera for a look “inside the Brexit storm”.

“I’d invite you to become a member of Parliament,” he told Myrie.

On the conclusion of the interview Kuenssberg reflected on Baker’s stunning statement by saying:“Politicians have great privilege, but it is not an easy life."
