Former first minister Humza Yousaf is facing a probe into donations made to a Gaza aid agency while members of his family were stuck in the warzone - although the Scottish government has stressed he is not being investigated about any possible conflict of interest.

Earlier this year, ex-SNP leader Mr Yousaf reportedly overruled officials to give the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) £250,000.

Mr Yousaf is understood to have intervened after officials recommended a £100,000-£200,000 donation to Unicef, the United Nations agency which provides humanitarian aid to children, to fund water programmes in Gaza.

However he instead declaring that £250,000 of taxpayers’ money should instead be given to UNRWA, the biggest international aid agency which in Gaza, which has in the past faced criticism over its alleged links with Hamas.

Mr Yousaf allegedly told officials prior to a meeting with UNRWA that “we should just announce an extra £250k to them”.

It subsequently emerged that the money came from the International Development Fund, a £10 million fund intended to be ring-fenced for projects in four specific “partner” countries – Malawi, Rwanda, Zambia and Pakistan.

Now Scottish government is conducting a “review of the processes involved in our response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza”, claims The Sunday Telegraph.

The admission followed a freedom of information request submitted by Craig Houston, a Glasgow resident who has been following the case via his YouTube channel “Craig Houston Talks To”.

A Scottish Government Spokesperson said: “Any suggestions of an investigation into Ministerial conflicts of interest or breaches of the Ministerial Code in relation to Scottish Government humanitarian aid are completely inaccurate.

“The Scottish Government intends to undertake a review of our future response to global humanitarian crises. Details of the review will be announced in due course.”

The Scottish Government’s £250,000 donation was announced on November 2, the same day Mr Yousaf met a delegation of senior UNRWA officials.

Mr Yousaf’s mother-in-law and father-in-law were provided with safe passage out of Gaza via the Rafah crossing the next day.

Mr Yousaf, who quit as first minister in April, has emphatically denied that the donation was in any way connected to the release.

A spokesman said at the time: “UNRWA had no role in the situation regarding the first minister’s extended family, and any suggestion of a conflict of interest in this matter would be completely untrue.”

Mr Yousaf’s in-laws travelled to Gaza in early October to see relatives but became stranded when the war began in the wake of the October 7 terror attacks on Israel, in which 1,200 are estimated to have died.

Express.co.uk has approached Mr Yousaf for comment.
