The new Government has been warned that scrapping previously-announced transport funding would be a “kick in the teeth” for millions of voters across the country.
Rishi Sunak announced £36 billion in new funding for local roads, buses and railways in November last year as a consolidation prize for scrapping the northern leg of HS2.

This would include electrification of a number of major train lines in Yorkshire, including Leeds, Hull and Sheffield, as well as new funding for West Yorkshire and Bradford.
At the weekend, Rachel Reeves guaranteed the money for a consultation for a new tram network in Leeds, and said she is still assessing funding for other projects.
Now the Express understands that Department for Transport figures are beginning to pour cold water on the previously-announced funding, as the Treasury starts work on the forthcoming Budget.

Asked today whether the transformational projects would still go ahead under the Labour Government, Sir Keir Starmer’s official spokesman refused to commit.
He merely said that the Government “has obviously taken the spending plan it inherited from the former government”.
“Obviously it is for future spending reviews to set out how future spending is set out.
“What this government has set out is a plan for reform of the railways, to take the railways back into public ownership. I don’t have any further update on HS2 beyond what has been said previously.”
However it was pointed out that the £36 billion announced by Mr Sunak wasn’t included in the Conservative Government’s last spending review, and therefore the spokesman’s answer allowed Labour wiggle room on their commitment to the spending.
This evening, the Conservative’s shadow transport secretary told the Express that cancelling the planned £36 billion spending on Network North “would be a kick in the teeth for millions of people across the country”.

Helen Whately, the MP for Faversham and Mid Kent, said: “It represents the biggest ever investment into transport for the North and Midlands, and will boost connectivity and economic growth across the UK.
“Every penny of the £36 billion is currently fully funded and communities are relying on these projects.
“Labour going back on it without warning in their manifesto would be outrageous. Voters in the north of England shouldn’t be taken for granted and deserve answers.”
The move, should Rachel Reeves decide to slash or scrap the local transport funding altogether, could raise serious concerns about the new Government’s dedication to left-behind areas.
Angela Rayner caused consternation last week when she revealed that the Government is ditching ‘levelling up’, including renaming her new department for local government.

Boris Johnson, who coined the phrase in 2019, slammed the move by Ms Rayner, warning: “Axing levelling up shows lack of ambition and a failure to believe in this country’s potential”.

“Labour will axe Brexit next. Then they will pointlessly whack up taxes. The drift backwards has begun.”
Speaking to the Yorkshire Post at the weekend, Rachel Reeves said: “We’re looking at everything that the previous government announced to make sure that the money is there and that would be a matter for Louise Haigh as Transport Secretary”.
“I recognise the benefits of these investments but we need to make sure that the money adds up… and is there to deliver them.”
