Rishi Sunak sparked big laughs in the House of Commons this afternoon with gags about his rise and fall, as MPs began debating the King’s Speech.
Taking to the dispatch box for a second time as Leader of the Opposition, Mr Sunak congratulated Labour backbencher Florence Eshalomi on her speech seconding the King’s Speech.

He joked: “The Hon. Lady will have been picked to second the honourable address because the whips office has her down as ‘one who will go far’.
“If I may offer some words of advice to members opposite: on the government benchers, life comes at you fast! Soon you might be fortunate enough to be tapped on the shoulder and offered a junior ministerial role.
"Then, you'll find yourself attending cabinet, then in the cabinet.

"And then when the prime minister's position becomes untenable, you might end up being called to the highest office.”
He joked: "Before you know it, you have a bright future behind you and you are left wondering if you can credibly be an elder statesman at the age of 44.”
Amid the typically lighthearted nature of the King’s Speech debate, however, Mr Sunak began the crucial work of holding the government to account.
He particularly focused on suggestions by new Chancellor Rachel Reeves that having entered the Treasury, the true state of the economy is worse than feared and may be the opening gambit to raise taxes beyond those set out in Labour’s manifesto.

Mr Sunak issued a stern warning to the new Government: “They have inherited an economy that is already on an upwards trajectory.
“The work of the OBR already means that the party opposite did have the full details of the public finances when they set out their manifesto. Now the OBR has rightly taken away from Governments the ability to make forecasts say what they want them to.
“But they have also taken away from oppositions coming into Government the ability to say they did not know the true state of the public finances.”
He cited Paul Johnson of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, who during the election said: “The books are wide open, fully transparent.

Mr Sunak warned: “The party opposite promised no tax rises on working people… in full knowledge of the public finances.
“It would be difficult for them to claim things are worse than they thought and then renege on those pledges.”
The Tory leader pledged to hold the Government to account on all their pledges from the general election.
