       Boris Johnson has revealed Donald Trump is in "superb form" after surviving an assassination attempt.

       The former Prime Minister hailed the Republican frontrunner's "courage, resilience and sheer indomitability" after a bullet ripped open his ear during a campaign rally on Saturday.

       Mr Johnson met President Trump in the margins of the Republican National Committee in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Tuesday.

       And he discussed Ukraine, insisting the Republican would "give the strong and decisive leadership necessary to protect democracy against aggression".

       He said: "It was great to see President Trump, who is on superb form following the appalling attempt on his life. I noted the courage, resilience and sheer indomitability with which he has responded.

       “We discussed Ukraine at length and I know that he will give the strong and decisive leadership necessary to protect democracy against aggression’."

       Nigel Farage, a friend of Donald Trump, said he does not believe the assassination attempt will change him.

       Speaking to GB News, the Reform UK leader said: “It was about half past eleven on Saturday evening when I got the call, they've shot Trump.

       “I was horrified, but somehow not particularly shocked. I think some of the narrative that has been whipped up against him, not just by those on the extreme left, but actually propagated through so-called comedians and quite a lot of American mainstream media, made me think that somehow it was inevitable that he would at some point face a serious attempt on his life.

       “I find it really hard to believe that the Secret Service could have allowed a man onto the only roof in the vicinity, 130 yards away from where President number 45 was speaking.

       “By an absolute miracle of fate, I mean literally, as the guy was about to pull the trigger, he moved his head sharply to look at one of the screens to get some immigration statistics, and the bullet went through his ear. And thank God for that.

       “Will it change him as a man? I very much doubt it. I think he'll be just even more determined to carry on the way that he is.

       “But you see, even before the election, he was looking in an even stronger position. And I say that because the polling in the key swing states is very much going in his direction."

       Mr Trump has expressed scepticism about Nato in the past, and his threats to reduce US support for Ukraine during the presidential election campaign have stoked fear in some Western capitals.

       Mr Johnson, who has cited the UK's support for Ukraine after Russia's invasion in 2022 as one of the key achievements of his leadership, previously said he endorsed the Republican's presidential bid as long as he backed Kyiv.

       "If he does the right thing and backs the Ukrainians, and I believe he will, a Trump presidency can be a big win for the world," he wrote in his Daily Mail column.

       Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Government has said it will work with whoever the US electorate returns to the White House, but senior figures were on Tuesday forced to push back against widely criticised remarks by Mr Trump's candidate for vice president.

       Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said she did not "recognise that characterisation" after Mr Trump's running mate JD Vance described Britain under Labour as the first "truly Islamist" country with a nuclear weapon, while Defence Secretary John Healey said the comment was "controversial".
