They want a “time limited” cross-party commission to bring forward legislative proposals that will reform the current system and how it’s funded.
Silver Voices, the influential campaign organisation for the over 60s has warned the crisis in social care is “unsustainable.”
Charities have warned that 2.6 million people in England aren’t getting the social care support they need and 400,000 are waiting to be assessed by local authorities.
Their warning comes as a Silver Voices petition, backed by the Daily Express, demanding a national strategy to end the crisis passed through the 15,000 barrier.

Labour, the Conservatives and the Lib Dems, who made it their central general election promise, have all promised to tackle the crisis.
Silver Voices believes that the NHS waiting times and bed shortages cannot be resolved until the long over-due decisions on the future funding and reform of social care are taken.
Its director Dennis Reed said: “With Labour’s overwhelming majority, there is a window of opportunity for cross-party talks to produce legislative proposals to reform and fund social care for the benefit of future generations of older people.
“There is no need for political shenanigans over this vexed issue at this stage of the new Parliament.
“All parties surely agree that affordable social care should be provided so that all older and disabled people can live with maximum independence in their own homes for as long as possible, to relieve pressure on the NHS. Now is the time for politicians to come together to meet this challenge”.

The department for Health and Social Care said this week it was committed to tackling the crisis.
A spokesperson said: “We know that people are suffering without the care they need, and we are committed to ensuring everyone lives an independent, dignified life.
“We are going to grip the social care crisis, starting with the workforce by delivering a new deal for care workers.
“We will also take steps to create a National Care Service underpinned by national standards, delivering consistency of care across the country.”
