Rachel Reeves was branded a “dodgy street swindler” by Tory Nigel Huddleston in a fierce row over Labour’s economic plans.
The MP for Droitwich, Evesham and the villages launched a scathing attack on the Chancellor after she refused to rule out tweaking so-called “fiscal rules” so she could free up £17billion in public finances.

Speaking ahead of a visit to New York and Toronto, Ms Reeves suggested the major accounting change could be on the cards, saying: “We’ll publish the precise details of the fiscal rules in the Budget.”
Tories accused Ms Reeves of moving the goalposts by pursuing a policy to exclude Bank of England losses in the nation’s debt-to-GDP measure, arguing it would ultimately result in more borrowing.

“She pretends everything’s fair while she gets you to look the other way so you can never walk away with your hard-earned money.
“Labour are doing what they’ve always done: laying the groundwork for more taxes.
“It’s Labour’s party trick. Once they run out of money, they will make a beeline for your wallet.”
He added: “Labour promised over 50 times in the General Election campaign not to raise taxes, but Reeves let slip she will raise taxes the first chance she gets.
“She also said she would keep to the same debt rule as ours, but that has also been thrown into the long grass. Another promise broken.”
He went on to claim Labour’s “poker face has slipped for good” with their “cunning plans laid bare before the British public”.
He said: “Unsurprisingly, it is your bank balance that will come off second best to a swollen state.”

Yesterday the Taxpayers’ Alliance campaign warned Ms Reeves could “fiddle the figures”, but could not “hide from the mounting debt crisis”.
The group’s head of campaigns, Elliot Keck, told the Express: “With the national debt surging by hundreds of millions of pounds a day already, taxpayers will rightly be concerned that this will be yet another government that delivers strong rhetoric on the public finances, while simply adding to the nation's credit card bill.
"Rachel Reeves should focus on making the difficult decisions, not meddling with methodologies in a doomed attempt to make ends meet.”
Ms Reeves is in America to drum up investment in the UK, and told reporters that she will get debt down “as a share of GDP”.

She added: “Crucially we will balance tax receipts with day-to-day spending. But we’ll set out the precise details of that at the time of the budget”.
She is set to meet the chiefs of several US banks and businesses in New York, before meeting former Bank of England Governor Mark Carney in Canada.
The Labour Party was approached for comment.
