Gavin Stephens, the chairman of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, said they are launching “one of the strongest national police responses ever” to deter more violence.

Some 6,000 specialist public protection officers will be deployed on Saturday to deter further violence. Fewer demonstrations are being advertised online, but local communities are said to be providing officers with crucial information about possible protests and disorder.

And Mr Stephens said the enhanced sharing of intelligence between forces and swift crackdowns on criminals is beginning to deter would-be rioters.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer wants the police to be on “high alert” to detect chaos.

Chief Constable Gavin Stephens told a media briefing: "I think we feel better prepared, definitely.

"Naturally, we've had days to plan and gear up the national response.

"We spoke about the scale of the national mobilisation, and that being as big as it's ever been, so definitely better prepared than last weekend.

"I think we also feel that the activity that's happened during the course of the week - in bringing really swift and strong justice - has helped.

"The strong message that communities sent on Wednesday evening that they don't tolerate hate and racism and violence, also, as potentially the start of a turning point in this whole thing.

"So, I think the mood is different as a consequence of all that."

The NPCC chairman added that police would be "prepared and ready" to deal with any disorder.

Almost 600 people have been arrested since disorder broke out almost two weeks ago.

But the number of people being detained is expected to surge.

Chief Constable Stephens said: "You will see this increasing in the coming days and weeks. The investigations are only just ramping up. People who took a few seconds to post online or share content maybe did not expect a knock on the door two days later.

“Thousands of specially trained officers remain on duty, ready to tackle any unrest and disorder, and we continue to monitor, gather and review intelligence to make sure our officers are where they need to be to keep their communities safe.

“We are doing everything we can to protect people so that they can enjoy a summer weekend, with many planned sporting fixtures and community celebrations.

“Our message to those involved in violence is that we continue to comb through thousands of images, live streams and videos as well as body worn footage to find you.

“We are grateful to those who are calling us to identify those in the images circulated by forces. We are also grateful for the many messages of support to the officers, staff and volunteers that have faced hatred, racial abuse and violence whilst doing their job."

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “I met with police chiefs from across the country again this morning to thank them and their officers for their strong, co-ordinated response to this criminal violence as we run up to the weekend - getting thousands more police onto the streets and pursuing fast arrests and prosecutions.

"I reiterated that the police and the wider criminal justice system have the Government's full support in making sure those who have committed crimes are brought rapidly to justice and in their work to keep our streets and communities safe. We said criminals would pay the price and we meant it."

During a visit to the Metropolitan Police's special operations room in Lambeth on Friday, the Prime Minister told broadcasters: "My message to the police and all of those that are charged with responding to disorder is maintain that high alert.

"I'm absolutely convinced that having the police officers in place these last few days, and the swift justice that has been dispensed in our courts have had a real impact.

"But we have to stay on high alert going into this weekend because we absolutely have to make sure that our communities are safe and secure and feel safe and secure."

At his third emergency Cobra meeting since violence broke out, the Prime Minister is understood to have said policing in the right places and swift justice over the past week, including sentencing, have acted as a deterrent to disorder.

Many planned events failed to materialise on Wednesday night.

More of those arrested in the violent disorder of the past week appeared in court on Friday and more than 190 charges have been brought over the unrest.

Mr Stephens also warned that those "intent on violence and destruction have not gone away".

Sir Keir also on Friday revealed the Government will review social media laws in the wake of the riot.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan told The Guardian he was worried about algorithms and misinformation in an interview published on Thursday, and said the Government should "check whether the Online Safety Act is fit for purpose".

Asked if he agreed with his Labour colleague, Sir Keir said: "I do agree that we're going to have to look more broadly at social media after this disorder but the focus at the moment has to be on dealing with the disorder and making sure that our communities are safe and secure."

And social media executives and users should be "mindful of the first priority, which is to ensure that our communities are safe and secure", the Prime Minister said.

Questioned about whether Elon Musk should be "mindful" of who he lets onto X, formerly Twitter, which he owns, Sir Keir Starmer replied: "I think people should be mindful of the first priority, which is to ensure that our communities are safe and secure.

"The vast majority of the public are absolutely repulsed by what they've seen in this disorder. They don't want it and they expect all of us, myself included, to do everything we possibly can to ensure that the disorder stops. And that's why the message those that are thinking about getting involved in disorder of any sort is very clear - if you involve yourself in disorder, then the full force of the law will be applied.

"And the fact that we've seen this week people not just in court but being sentenced to significant terms of custody for their behaviour just a few days ago I think is a very important message to anyone who's thinking of getting involved in the coming days."
