Furious pensioners have lined up to savage Chancellor Rachel Reeves, with critics variously denouncing her decision to cut the winter fuel announcement as "a serious betrayal” and “disgusting”.
Ms Reeves last month confirmed the government was pulling the plug on the annual ￡300 payment for all but the least well-off pensioners in an apparent attempt to plug a ￡20 billion financial black hole.

Reform UK MP Lee Anderson called for Ms Reeves to resign earlier this month, while Tory MP Greg Smith said she had won “the award for the shiniest brass neck of the week”.
And their criticisms were echoed by others who spoke to Luke Tryl, the UK Director of the More in Common think tank, in Leigh earlier this week.

Another, Dave, added: "You've paid into a pension to have a better standard of living once you do retire, but then you're penalised.
"They never mentioned tax in the manifesto, but 1st thing they do is chop winter fuel for pensioners. If they had an election now. Do you think they'd win it?"
Lynn suggested pensioners were "second-class citizens".

She added: “They don’t care. The majority of pensioners especially in winter can’t afford to put the heating on it’s a choice of heating or food and it’s absolutely disgusting."
Referring to her choice on July 4, she said: “I wish I had gone for the Greens.”
Attempting to defend her controversial move in the Commons on July 29, Ms Reeves, the Labour MP for Leeds West and Pudsey, tried to pin the blame on the outgoing Conservative Government of former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
She said: "I can understand why people, and Members, are angry. I am angry too. The previous Government let people down.

She continued: "Today, I am calling out the Conservatives’ cover-up and I am taking the first steps to clean up what they have left behind, but the scale of the inheritance we have been left means that the decisions we have so far announced will not be enough.”
Such a level of “overspend was “not sustainable”, Ms Reeves claimed.
She added: "Left unchecked, it is a risk to economic stability - and unlike the Conservative Party, I will never take risks with our country’s economic stability. It therefore falls to us to take the difficult decisions now to make further in-year savings."
