Mozambique in southeast Africa has beautiful beaches and cities with barely any tourists but the UK Foreign Office warns tourists could be kidnapped.

With a population of over 30 million, Mozambique is bordered by Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini and South Africa.

The country is home to long sandy beaches, turquoise waters with colourful fish, and remote archipelagos. There is also colonial-style architecture, thriving nightlife, a fascinating cultural mix and vast tracts of hinterland.

Some of Mozambique’s top attractions include Bazaruto National Park of five islands, Mount Namuli, Chissano Gallery, Maputo train station, Centro Cultural Franco-Mocambicano, Gorongosa National Park and Parque Nacional das Quirimbas.

Lonely Planet said of the country: “Mozambique beckons with its coastline and swaying palms, its traditions, its cultures, its vibe and its opportunities for adventure. Discovering these attractions is not always easy, but it is unfailingly rewarding.”

But despite the country’s natural beauty and draws, the UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to parts of Mozambique. The northeast region is on the office’s ‘do not visit’ list.

The Foreign Office has said that due to the presence of groups with links to Islamist extremism, there is a threat of kidnap in Mozambique.

British nationals are seen as legitimate targets, including tourists, humanitarian aid workers, journalists and business travellers. The reason for someone’s presence in the country is unlikely to protect them or secure safe release.

Kidnaps are generally for financial gain or motivated by criminality. While most victims have been Mozambicans, kidnappers may also target foreigners.

IS-Mozambique, a terrorist group with links to Daesh (formerly known as Islamic State) has previously carried out 76 attacks since January, resulting in over 125 deaths.

Other dangers in Mozambique include carjacking, police harassment, street crime involving knives and firearms, and terrorism.
